Ballintubber Abbey, situated near Claremorris in County Mayo, was founded back in 1216 by the King of Connacht, Cathal Crovdearg O'Conor. Despite Ballintubber Abbey's history, which included repression and burning, it now has the unique fame of being Ireland's only Royal Abbey which has been continually in use for over 780 years.
